Abutments are actually short and strong screws that are placed just above the gum line and are made of metal or materials that are the same color as the teeth. Since the fixture as the base of the implant is completely below the gum line and in connection with the jawbone, there must be an interface between the fixture and the implant crown to have a complete implant unit, similar to a real tooth.
